Does anyone know how to make a weapon that has longer or shorter reach than usual? Do I need to make a new potion effect?

I don't reeealy know... but that sounds cool! (I'm stuck in italics rn dunno why) What weapon will it be?
all i can think of is that when you click it shoots a invisible projectile that depawns after a certain amount of time.
Weapon would be a claymore with longer reach in my more weapons mod.
